cairo: Egyptian police fearing an outbreak of religious clashes beefed up their presence in a village where an elderly Coptic Christian killed yesterday, a security official said. Muslim relatives of a young woman who was dating a Copt stormed her former boyfriend’s house in the southern village after hearing a rumour that he had distributed a CD with explicit pictures of her. They found his elderly father at home and killed him, the official said, adding that at least three men were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the attack.
Egypt’s south, which is inhabited mostly by poor farmers and workers, is strongly conservative. Copts account for an estimated six to 10 percent of Egypt’s 80-million population. They complain of discrimination and have been the targets of sectarian killings and violence
